What is the Core Paths Plan?

The Plan identifies a network of paths that link communities and gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy local greenspace and countryside.  This document invites representations from land owners, walkers, cyclists, horse riders and all those with an interest in outdoor access.

The Plan can be viewed via the interactive pages using the following link and selecting 'Core Path Plan (Version 1.2)'.

The Plan can also be downloaded as a pdf from the Related Documents Section below.

The Plan in Brief

Core paths will start and finish near where people live.
The 12 draft core paths have a total length of 157 kilometres (98 miles).
A significant length of the network (30%) is comprised of public rights of way, where access rights are long established.
The majority of the network (90%) utilises well established paths including rights of way, public roads and cycle lanes.

Consultation on the Plan

The statutory consultation period will run for 12 weeks from 8th July 2010 - 30th September 2010.  Any person, group or organisation, either individually or collectively can make a representation on the Plan.  All comments are welcome but under Section 18 of the Land Reform Scotland Act 2003 formal objections must be received in writing.

In conjunction with the consultation on the Plan, feedback is invited on the accompanying Revised Environmental Report which is available to download in the Related Documents Section at the bottom of this page.

Braidbar Quarries and Braidbar Right of Way

The Council has recently received updated information and advice regarding the ground conditions at Braidbar Quarries by our specialist consultants. In view of this advice, it is now necessary to close a number of areas at the site to public access with immediate effect. This will include the (temporary) closure of the existing right of way through the site. This course of action has been recommended by our specialist consultants, who are appointed to investigate the ground conditions at Braidbar Quarries periodically.

We currently have contractors on site erecting additional fencing, and signs to warn of the danger of ground collapse. Our regular inspection regime at the site will continue, and we will update you on progress should the current situation change. The Council will regularly monitor the site and will take action against anyone who damages either the fencing or the warning signs, which have been erected for everyone’s protection.

I can assure you that we would not be introducing these safety measures unless it was considered to be absolutely necessary to do so.

For your own safety and the safety of others, please respect the new fencing and signs being erected and encourage your family, friends and neighbours to do the same.

The southern section of the Braidbar site can be considered secure and we suggest using the path shown in blue on the plan attached below.  This path gives access to the safe greenspace and playing fields surrounding Huntly Pavilion.
