Service name: Roads - gritting
Question: How do the council decide which roads to grit in the bad weather?
Answer: It is not possible with the resources available to grit every road when adverse weather conditions are forecast. We have therefore formed fixed gritting routes based on the following priorities .
1) Strategic and main routes. eg Eastwoodmains Road, Lochlibo Road
2)Accesses to Fire Stations and Medical facilities. Bus routes where considered appropriate plus one access route to each school where it is serviced by a dedicated bus service.
3)Other A and B class roads not included above.
4)Local concentrations of employment.
5)Other C class and unclassified public roads.
6)Access to isolated settlements not included above.
7) Prospective public roads.
8)Private roads.
These routes are pre-planned and are treated when a freezing road forecast is obtained. Under these normal winter conditions priorities 1 to 3 plus some of priorities 4 to 6 would be treated in the first or second runs.
However under some conditions eg heavy snowfalls or freeze/rain/freeze cycle, gritters may have to remain on the priority 1 and 2 routes.
In marginal conditions only high routes would be treated or patrols undertaken.
