There are several artists, both past and present, who have connections with East Renfrewshire. We have articles on three of these artists: William Gemmell, who sculpted 'Robert Burns and Highland Mary'; Marianne Grant, who wrote 'I Knew I Was Painting for my Life'; and John E. Maguire, who painted local scenes of Eaglesham.
William Gemmell was a joiner and sculptor who lived and worked in Eaglesham in the 19th century. John Maguire was an Eaglesham artist who worked in oils and watercolours at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The artist Marianne Grant, who lived for many years in Newton Mearns, was a survivor of the Holocaust. She survived the occupation of Czechoslovakia, forced labour and imprisonment in the concentration camps.
More about these artists can be found by using the links in the related pages area or by using the main navigation menu.
The Mearns History Group have recently researched another local artist Harold Storey (1888-1965). Follow the link in the External Websites area to find out more about him and his work.
