Eaglesham, whose name means a church town, belonged to the Montgomerie family who were earls of Eglinton. After the Second World War Eaglesham was in a dilapidated state with many of its houses damp and crumbling, however, today Eaglesham is a particularly beautiful, conservation village which owes its 18th century style to Alexander, the 10th Earl of Eglinton who designed it as a planned village in a simple A-shape on each side of the village green.

The village is sited on an elevated position, with a meadow and a stream, mature trees separating the two rows of houses.

In 1960 Eaglesham became the first Scottish village to be listed as a place of special historic interest.
