| In 1791 the 11th Earl built this cotton mill on the Orry. It was built by Murdoch & Aiken, Engineers, Glasgow and owned by Maclean & Brodie. By 1845 it employed about 200 people. 80 of them were under the age of 16 (59 were 13 or under) In order for the mill to be built, the Earl had to dispone the land where the mill was to be built to the feuars so they could collect tack duty from the mill owners. The mill was powered by a huge waterwheel 45’ in diameter, 50hp and needed 740 cubic feet of water per minute. It was said that it was so well constructed that those inside the factory couldn’t hear any noise from the water. In 1876 the mill was burned down and never rebuilt. | |
