Instrumental music service
East Renfrewshire Council is delighted to offer an instrumental music service for pupils at our schools.
It's designed to help our young musicians develop their skills and talents.
This page lets you know the score about what's available for your son or daughter and how to get the best of our service.
Instrumental tuition in schools
Instrumental tuition begins in your son or daughter's primary school.
All tutors are fully qualified, experienced and employed by the education department.
Pupils are taken through listening skills exercises, tonal and rhythmic, at primary three or four stage.
We lend instruments to pupils during the first two terms. After that, we would expect you to buy an instrument with the exception of very expensive instruments which are available on a long term loan for your son or daughter. We help by making arrangements for you to receive information about purchasing the instrument or meeting suppliers during the summer term.
If the instrument that your son or daughter wishes to play is not available in his or her primary school, then he or she may be able to join our Saturday morning music centre at Williamwood High School.
Charging for tuition
The council charges for tuition and full details will be made available to you before your son or daughter starts on a programme.
There is no charge for pupils taking standard grade, higher grade or certificate of sixth year studies music exams or if you are receiving benefit.
It depends on places being available and as the tuition is out with normal activities, you may have to provide an instrument for your son or daughter.
Developing talent
As you son or daughter progresses, he or she will enjoy playing with other young musicians as part of school ensembles.
After that, once they become even more competent musicians, they may be invited to join one of our acclaimed East Renfrewshire bands, orchestras of choirs.
We're keen for your son or daughter to share his or her talent with other pupils and, if selected, to enjoy the benefits of playing in one of our bands or orchestras or singing in one of our choirs.
Your son or daughter's teacher will let you know if he or she is eligible to join.
Pupils do not have to be receiving tuition through their school to be considered. Any boy or girl attending an East Renfrewshire Council school can apply.
Contact your son or daughter's music teacher for full details.
