*NEW* Mills, Merchants and Slaves: the development of East Renfrewshire 16+

Led by expert tutor, Dr. Stuart Nisbet, this series of interactive two week mini courses will explore what shaped modern East Renfrewshire, from colonial connections to textile mills. Each of the courses will consist of walk* and a talk.

The 18th century was a time of great change in this area. From the 1750s wealthy landowners and merchants, often with overseas connections, began to improve the farmland. From the 1780s most of the settlements in East Renfrewshire originated or expanded due to developing technology which harnessed water power at more than a dozen big cotton mills and nearly 50 bleachfields or printfields. These courses explore how this all came together in the late 18th and early 19th centuries to form the basis of modern day East Renfrewshire. The tutor will use original research about local merchants and specific parts of the area which will give participants an understanding of what was going on on a wider scale.

Try one course.... or book the lot!

*Meeting points for walks will be confirmed nearer the time. In the event of inclement weather walk and talk may swap days.
