Margaret Gibson

Image of Margaret Gibson, a schoolgirl from Barrhead

Margaret Gibson was a young girl who came from a fairly well-off family. She was typical of many young girls of her age, had similar interests to the other children and attended the local school in Barrhead. She lived during the 1920s and 1930s and sadly died at the age of 11 years of Scarlet Fever on 11th January 1933 at Darnley Hospital. She is buried at Neilston Cemetery. Her family kept many of her possessions and later donated them to East Renfrewshire Museum. Although the museum is now closed the Gibson Family Collection is still in our care and forms a rich insight into the life of a young schoolgirl in the 1920s and 30s. The collection contains photographs, newspaper cuttings, books, school jotters, clothing, and personal items such as embroidered handkerchiefs, a hairbrush, trinket box and more.
