Leisure and Recreation

Before the advent of television people had to make their own entertainment. In the small towns and villages that make up the current area of East Renfrewshire there was a variety of clubs and societies that the community could join to pass the time, when they were not working.  There were clubs and societies for men and women, like the Townswomen's Guild for women and Working Men's clubs for men. There were also various sporting clubs, such as quoits and handball and sports that we would consider more common today such as bowling, tennis, football and cricket to name but a few. Most towns and villages had their local parks where families often spent Sundays with their parents strolling while their children played on the swings or explored.
